Halloween Edition

Posted in Updates at 9:50 am by maf

Happy Halloween!

A quick reminder:  there are a few dead links still on the Exhibition Page.   There were some reports that emails didn’t go through to Andy’s Charter email address.  If your link isn’t there or doesn’t appear the way you want it to,  email him ASAP at both his Charter address and through WebCT.

I’m looking forward to the Stars tomorrow!  I will “see” EDIT 6900 around 9a in Wimba Classroom in WebCT 7460.

Not 6900, not 7340 – we won’t be there!  7460. 🙂

Star Exhibition Prep & Reminders

Posted in Updates at 9:32 am by maf

This post deals only with EDIT 6900.  (EDIT 7340: you have a parallel, but slightly different, post over on the AP blog.)  Here I will address a technical issue and provide a schedule for Saturday.

Technical issue.  Today is the day you should send (or should have already sent) your Exhibition link to Allyson.  Check yourself:

  • It should not be necessary for visitors to login. (In the Google world, this means you should “publish” your Exhibition.)
  • It should not be necessary for visitors to download anything.
  • There must be a Comment avenue – either on the Exhibition itself, or on the WebCT 7460 Discussion Board.

Hopefully, there are no surprises above, because it’s what we’ve been saying all along.  Even at this late date, it should be possible to repair a problem.

If you were expecting us to download a Powerpoint, here’s a solution: GoogleDocs Presentations allows you to upload a Powerpoint file for publication.  Easy. You may have to tweak it – and it won’t be as elegant.  But – Powerpoints are really awful to download, given file size and version control, etc.

End of technical news.  If you have problems, questions, emergencies – I am home (mostly) through Saturday – no trips to Athens (yay).

Next topic: Schedule. Here is the overall pattern for both classes:

  1. before 9am: EDIT 6900 logs into WebCT Wimba 7460.  Repeat: 7460.
  2. 9am:  EDIT 6900 business, Q&A, etc.
  3. around 9:15: Exhibition instructions (7340 may join in)
  4. 10am – 1pm:  leave Wimba; visit Exhibits independently; make comments; nominate for Awards
  5. 1pm: both classes meet for Exhibition Closing Ceremonies
  6. 2pm-3pm: 6900 may have group meetings in separate classrooms; 7340 will have their business session

The agenda is ready.  I promise there will be no political ads. 🙂 I will work on the Planner tomorrow.

Finally, I’m grading the Critiques at a leisurely pace, with a finish date of 11/8 for assignments submitted on time.

End of news – send me any questions or problems and call if you need.

Reminder: Exhibition links due in 1 week

Posted in Assignments at 11:32 am by maf

Where does the time go?

I looked at the calendar this morning and realized that in one week, it’s time for you to submit your Exhibition Link to Allyson.  (I pasted her email and the Exhibition Page link all over several class documents – I think you can find it easily now.)

I’ll be in Athens Friday, but otherwise have a normal schedule.  I’m madly grading a lot of assignments – plenty to do – but don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

Monday Update

Posted in Updates at 3:03 pm by maf

I’ve now finalized your Planner (Cycle 4), and it’s now in a slightly more logical order.  I installed direct links to Allyson’s email address and the Exhibition Page as well.

I haven’t made much progress yet today on your PPP Drafts, but I do hope to get those back to you by Saturday.

I look forward to seeing many of you at COMO!

Rainy Wednesday

Posted in Updates at 12:53 pm by maf

It’s pouring here – a good thing, after a month in which our rainfall was 5% of normal. On the other hand, I’m still fighting post-tornado erosion (because the topsoil was largely scraped away along with all of the tree debris) – and worried that the rain will wash away the rye grass seed that was just put down to help stabilize it.

But to business.

I’m not hearing tremendous levels of protest about the dates suggested for next semester.  That’s good – so I’ll move forward in my calendar planning, although you needn’t consider anything set in stone just yet.

Planning for Saturday is progressing.   The agenda is just about set.  Remember that this class is all day – shared with the Ed.S. folks, with only a slight variation in schedule.  You will have an opportunity after lunch to meet with your group while the Ed.S. folks hear from Karen Garner, a Cohort 6 Ed.S. survivor.  (Folks in groups of one are welcome to listen to Karen, if desired.)

I’ve been having fun playing with audio feedback – I can say so much more than I would ever have time to write out!   When your PPP Drafts come in Saturday, I fully plan to use this tool.

If I don’t blog again before Saturday, I look forward to seeing you then.

Dates: Spring 2009 – opportunity for input

Posted in Business tagged at 3:42 pm by maf

This message applies to most of Cohort 7: Ed.S. students, Interns, M.Ed. students.  It’s a “trial balloon” to test out dates for next semester.

I am anxious to firm up the meeting calendar for next term, as I’m sure most of you are, too.  As the “senior” group, I ask you first to express preferences on dates.

EDIT 7650 (Ed.S.) will meet about 5 times, at 2-3 hours each.  EDIT 7460 (all active interns, whether registered or not) will meet  approximately 4 times, at two hours each.  In these internship meetings, we will likely discuss capstone activities like portfolios, and other events related to graduation, certification, finishing up, and hunting for jobs.  Thus, Ed.S. students will need to set aside most of the day, while M.Ed.s will need to obligate about 2 hours.  I don’t want to talk about exactly which hours just yet, but falling between 9a-3p unless you have other bright ideas.

Jan 24, Feb 7, Feb 21 (Ed.S. only), Mar 14, Apr 18

This schedule avoids the Children’s Lit conference Saturday (Mar 7), MLK weekend, and  Bunny Day (Apr 11).  With the exception of Mar 28, all other dates belong to Cohort 8.

I’ll take comments here or via email through early next week.  Speak up – if I don’t hear from you, I’ll assume you are ok with these dates.

RQs finished

Nicely done as a group!  Not a “start over” in the bunch. 🙂

You will find your feedback in your WebCT/6900 dropbox for this assignment.  Some are in audio format – .mp3 – a new thing I’m trying out.  Let me know if that doesn’t work – or if you have other questions.
