Stars finished! And 2 polls

I finished grading all the Stars today in a rush.  You know how it goes – I started out very careful and methodical, but here it is almost 2 weeks past and the Stars are old news.  In the end, the feedback given by all of you to each other – about 300 comments – did the job far better than I could.  Check your grade.

And now, I’d like your opinion on the whole Star Exhibition idea, anonymously.  Here’s a 3-question poll, which will take you maybe 5 minutes.

If you’d like to work on your APA skills,  try this little 1-minute quiz.  Anonymous, again.  I’ll put up a new one every few days for the next week or two – in the hopes of helping you avoid the most major APA mistakes.

(Loving the new Google Forms tool.  Can’t you tell?)  When they’re anonymous like this, there’s no risk – I can’t even tell who has actually done it.  Therefore, these are for genuine practice and opinions with no identities attached!

Handouts for Saturday

The question came up: how many handouts should we make for class on Saturday?

To be honest, I’m going to look the other way if you don’t make these – I think I will edit paper handouts out of this assignment for the future. It’s really a holdover from days of yore.

But, some people like to provide them and some listeners like to receive them as a concrete souvenier or cognitive reminder of the presentation.  They do serve a purpose, and many conference presenters still provide them.

So:

  • They are really optional.
  • If you make them, keep to a single page (double sided is ok).
  • If you choose to make them, provide 20-25 copies – in case of Ed.S. guests.

I’m still taking requests for batting order!  Spots 1-4 and the last spot are taken. (The agenda is up to date for the moment.)

Clarification: What’s due on 11/15

Hello!   Thanks to Anne Marie and Kristie, I found a mistake on the Planner that I will clarify here.

All you have to do on Nov 15 is show up and give your presentation.  That’s it.  Nothing else is due.

The dropboxes should be set up to receive your presentation files, notebook URLS, design ideas, and reflections – all on later dates.

I am happy for your presentation to be a URL – in many ways, it’s easier to deal with almost any slide sharing format rather than Powerpoint.  But I will take the Powerpoint – except not in Office 2007 format.

Remember that the classroom computer may not run Office 2007 Powerpoint – another reason to use a 2.0 slide presenter.  Googledoc Presentations, Slide Share, and Voice Thread are all possibilities.

I fixed the little due date problem on the Planner and hope it’s not anywhere else.  (I had changed my mind and then not found all of the references to the original due dates.)

Once again, let me emphasize that it’s better to plan for the short side (10 minutes) of the target time range rather than the long side (20 minutes).  Let me know if you have any questions!

Crits are finished

The results are in – I have now graded all Crits that were submitted through the dropbox.

A few didn’t come in.  Check the dropbox and gradebook to make sure that I received your submission and gave it a score.

Also, send your critique link directly to Andy.  Most are there, but a few aren’t linked.  This resource will be useful for all of us in the future, so it’s worth following up on this detail.

Post-Exhibition Update

The Star Exhibition Day went quite well, I thought!  I will try to “publish” the Wacky Awards list in the next few days.  Congratulations to all.

The following pertains just to EDIT 6900.

I updated your Planner this morning.

Most significantly, note the Design Lesson.  This is an audio for you to listen to before you complete the Design Idea assignment.  It’s on the Planner for the current cycle, but I know how this goes – you are most concerned about your Presentation on 11/15 at the moment.  Therefore, I recommend that you work through the audio when you’re ready to tackle that assignment.  The audio provides verbal content that I would have presented to you in person if we had enough class time – so I highly recommend that you take advantage of it.  Full access details are provided in the Planner.

November 15 Batting Order:  you can reserve this in advance.  One team has already requested spot #1.  The other positions (2 – 10) are open. Email me if you have a preference.

Also, think ahead to presentation file management.  I highly recommend that you use a 2.0 presentation tool, for ultimate flexibility.  I will be happy to link in your title and URL to the agenda for everyone’s convenience.  (I also recommend that you download a backup copy to a thumb drive just in case of network issues.)  If you want to use Powerpoint, use the old Office software or bring it on a laptop; I can’t load these files on my website but could provide WebCT space if requested. Let’s make every effort to provide access to each presentation for everyone in the class.

As I’ve said many times before: always have at least one backup avenue any time you do a presentation with technology.
