Recommendations: Advice

Posted in Announcements at 7:18 am by maf

Hello!

So far I must say that this hasn’t been a relaxing summer!

I can tell that the job hunt is still on out there.  My clue: floods of requests for Recommendations – a virtual tsunami of recommendations to process.

I need your help with this.

It is in my best interest that you get a job, for a number of reasons – so I want to do all that I can to help.

I don’t have a printer – this is the key thing.  Mine is caput.   I will not ask for another – because of both economic and ecologic reasons.

Here are some specific strategies that will greatly enhance my ability to help you with recommendations:

  • Just remember: I cannot generate paper. I can’t fax, either.  It’s either electronic or mail.
  • Almost always, there’s a part for you to fill out.  Please fill this out!
  • No matter how urgent it is, I usually can’t get one done by the next day.
  • Please mail the form to me in MACON.  I’m not going much to Athens these days. You can find my Macon address several ways – look in WebCT, any of my courses, at the bottom of the home page.  Or just ask me over email.
  • Please include an addressed envelope and please include a stamp.   UGA doesn’t provide postage for me, either.
  • Electronic forms, of course, are great!  That is, if they WORK.  If I have to do a lot of fiddling to make it work – I don’t have time for that.  Pdf forms usually don’t work for this reason, unfortunately.

I really am very happy to fill out recommendations.  It’s just these little impediments that can make it much more difficult than it should be.  If you follow all of the ideas above, it takes maybe 15 minutes tops to get this out the door.  No problem a-tall.

Good luck with job-hunting!  Keep at it – I’m hearing about successes every week.

Graduation Reminders

Posted in Announcements at 5:41 am by maf

It’s summer and we’re supposed to be taking it easy, right?  So far, not the case, unfortunately.

Administrative tasks have caused me to neglect you a bit.  There are many deadlines coming up in the next few days.

  • June 10:  Last day to register for Marathon
  • June 12:  Grad App and Program of Study due to Graduate School – if you haven’t done these yet, drop everything and do it today
  • June 15:  Portfolio (or AP) to advisor (for Summer Marathoners)
  • June 19: Portoflio/AP ready for committee
  • June 26: Marathon

You can find many forms and tools linked on the SLM Graduation Page.

There is an internship deadline on the calendar as well, but my records show that all enrolled interns have satisfied it.

On another note, I hope all or most of you will consider mentoring a new student.  I’ve run out of mentor volunteers amidst the match-up process – soon I’ll have to ask people specifically. Thanks to the many who have volunteered – and you should have your mentee’s name(s) by now.

Reminders and updates

Posted in Updates tagged , at 8:45 am by maf

Tomorrow is the big day!  Everything due.

Of the several submitted so far, I’ve finished only one – and it was submitted weeks ago. Obviously, I have a lot to do next week!

End-of-semester progress:

  • Course evals: 75% submitted.  Great!  Of course, I’m hoping for 100%, but this is a really good start.
  • All but one of you has submitted both Research and E-permissions.  This is fabulous, and I’ll just bug that one person about this henceforth.  This is really super, because they’re technically not due until tomorrow!  Thank you.

One more item of progress:  remember those Lesson Plan Menus mentioned in class awhile back?  Anne Marie gathered them for us, and obtained permission to share.  Find them in WebCT/7460/Resources/Lesson Menus.  You’re on your own with the Microsoft Publisher format that these are in.

Course Evals open

Posted in Updates at 9:21 am by maf

Hi – quick reminder – Course Evals are now open.

I hope you will remember my comments about the apparent trickiness of the form – just make sure you’re choosing the values you want to choose.

And I will keep updating you as things wrap up over the next 2 weeks!

Summer Marathon Date Set: June 26

Posted in Announcements at 10:20 am by maf

It’s pretty much official – if you’re in the Summer Marathon, block off June 26.

Instructions for registering, etc., will come from Janette.  However, I’m sure this won’t happen for awhile – since we need to recover from the Spring Marathon first!

Congrats and thanks!

To echo Janette’s post on SLM-L earlier, congratulations to all Spring Marathoners! They were interesting down through the very last one.  All did well – and I’m sure all are feeling quite relieved!

Summer graduates, I’m sure you will do just as well.

I enjoyed last Saturday – hope you all had fun, too. I especially want to thank you for the lovely garden basket and gift certificate. I will enjoy both immensely!

April 18m 10a.m.: Last official Cohort 7 meeting!

Posted in Updates at 8:04 am by maf

We’re going out in style with a lunch and general party atmosphere.

I’ve made an agenda that contains every last little thing I want to tell you. We’ll go over as much or as little of that as necessary.

The bookstore should be open for cap/gown orders.

We’ll take a big photo – bring your camera and get a shot.

Ten a.m., lunch around noon, lasting til whenever.  By BYOB, I’m sure Tanya meant non-alcoholic. 🙂  If you missed her emails, they’ve come over SLM-L .  Bring your cash (or dessert), and I hope someone will help with the math and money collection.

See you there!

Caps/Gowns; April 18

Posted in Updates at 10:26 am by maf

Hello!

(Have you filled out Tanya’s pizza/sub survey yet? I did – it’s easy! Published over SLM-L yesterday.)

The Gwinnett Bookstore manager has agreed to be on-site April 18 to take your cap/gown measurements and orders for May graduation.  That would be about your last reasonable chance to do it.

Portfolio review is now underway.  I’m not finished with all of my advisees yet, but by now everyone has at least heard from me – or I “released” the portfolio.  (Can you guys see when the a portfolio has been released?)

I’m looking forward to seeing you all on April 18 (not this weekend!), 10am. Enjoy Easter weekend – no SLM classes meeting on April 11.

Misc. Reminders and News

Posted in Updates at 11:18 am by maf

Hello!   I’ve been collecting bits and pieces to pass and along:

  1. Andy P. is famous! (although they spelled his name wrong!)  This is a really nice spot in the Athens Banner-Herald.
  2. Caps and gowns may be ordered through the Gwinnett/Intellicenter bookstore. Contact Meredith Haring, 678-985-6788, 1081mgr@fheg.follett.com.
  3. Your Portfolio (M.Ed.) or Applied Project (Ed.S.) is due to your advisor on April 6.

A portfolio-related question: there has been some confusion about how to align all the different assessments (projects) with the AASL standards.  Here’s a response I’ve given to this question:

As for alignment, let me direct you here:   http://it.coe.uga.edu/~mfitzger/aasl-matrix.html.   It’s a valuable synthesis activity to think about alignment for yourself, but the projects were designed to align in certain ways as outlined in the matrix. This was done about 3 years ago, and some projects possibly have drifted – but the matrix will tell you at least what they’re supposed to do. Hopefully, this will make the alignment process much easier for you.

Next Cohort 7 meeting: Apr 18, 10am.  See you there!
